Really enjoyed this. I love all the interpretations of each generation and the time stamps offered.
It’s so fascinating to me that each Gen is so shaped by celebrity influences of that generation. I guess it’s a common thread that everyone understands, but I wonder what it would be like without it?
Maybe I was lucky, but it felt possible to get to college, get a decent job, and manage a house. Those things seem further out of reach for the generations after us. I’m glad for them, pushing back against the path that was set out for us. Sad for them and this always connected, always on world.
Lovely wishes for your child. I wish the same for my kids!
I love this. I was raised by a Gen X mum and so much of this resonates with what differentiates our versions of freedom and life-living. The thrill of being unobserved is what most made me pause and put language to how I’m feeling. The last paragraph is an incredible reminder and what I think many of us are slowly, softly coming to realise. Thanks for this read!
This was familiar! I was nostalgic! I longed for glorious boredom. Anniki, thanks for the reminder of how I once sought freedom, the ways that's morphed and the bits I've held onto, and what I don't want to lose / want to pass on to my millennial daughter about being free in disconnection.
Recognising your cultural and musical reference points, I still wonder what’s Gen x? I never followed these descriptions because I feel so out of those limiting borders. I listened to all those bands but was never a huge fan of any of them. Radiohead and Blur of course had some brilliant songs that stand the test of time. Suede’s Animal Nitrate I love too. There’s music that good these days but not played on radio. We have to dig it out somehow. I wonder if all the superficialness that they try to force upon us leads to forgetting the history and the liberties that were in the old days?
I enjoyed reading this. "We have lost the ability to be fully disconnected and to be on our own and okay with that. It has become so so hard to do nothing." That really resonated with me. I love doing nothing and have worked really hard to get back to what that feels like. I would recommend reading "Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto" for more about just BEING and resting and doing nothing.
Thank you for this! I do remember being so incredibly bored. But I was also paid during my nurse training and started my working life with no debt. It is so much harder for this generation.

I'm right there with you and write about my adventures as a gex x hobo punk in 90s NZ.
I'm trying to raise my son to have the free experience you describe.
Many intentional communities are filled with get x peeps!

Mid 1960- early 1980 roughly!
Thank you!

Great summary to your daughter… reminds me of that saying, dance like nobody is watching… we could.
