In my late teens I lived in Amsterdam and spent a lot of time watching TV. When I wasn’t watching TV I was going out and taking substances. I felt low much of the time and stared out the window people watching (we were on the third floor of a decrepit apartment block in the old part of town - an area frequented by junkies who were constantly trying to steal bikes if they weren’t locked up properly or even if they were, they’d just saw the lock off). I spent about 2 years in suspended animation whilst all my school friends passed their A levels and went to university. Eventually I got fed up of doing nothing and feeling rotten about myself and I headed back to the UK.
