I’m continuing to work on this new fiction book which has some real life experience thrown in there too. In this extract Bernie can’t sleep and is beginning to realise that her work isn’t helping her menopause - if anything it’s exacerbating everything and making things feel impossible.

Here it is:

I awoke with a start. It was two in the morning. The insomnia was always there. Usually I would get to sleep just fine but then would wake suddenly and instead of doing what normal people did, getting up, making myself a warm milk, maybe switching some classical music on my headphones or meditating, instead I checked my phone. Elizabeth was in China, meeting with some new suppliers (she liked to play down that the supplements and leggings were made in China because it didn’t quite fit with the packaging and ethical credentials (supporting the menopause etc.))

I thought I’d have a quick look to see if there were any messages from her. It was stupid of course because when you’re awake and it’s the middle of the night, the last thing you need is to start worrying about work, especially as nobody else is awake and there isn’t a lot you can actually do but I had that curiosity, that sabotage feeling that I sometimes got.
